17″ Vinyl 1983 Effanbee’s Groucho Marx. Groucho came with the following information: A true individualist, the original “antiestablishmentarian”….Yes that’s right, here is Groucho Marx, the fifth of Effanbee’s Legend Series… a wild and crazy guy and a celebrated personality amongt those who faced the footlights. Groucho was certainly the most lasting character of the famous Marx Brothers. However in the beginning it was Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo, born with greasepaint on their faces that took New York by storm in 1924 with their first hit “I’ll Say She Is”. From there they cavorted through plays and films driving writers and producers wacky as they habitually refused to follow scripts but instead treated us to their zany personalized humor. Groucho managed to lead the way and immortalize himself with his unique wit, wisdojm and appearance. Effanbee has brought to life this genius of laughter complete with all his trademarks, the greasepaint moustache, swallow tail coat, spectacles and even a smelly cigar…whew!! Thanks for the memories Groucho….you made us laugh hilariously!!”
The information goes on to say:” Effanbee Legend Series Hertiage-Very briefly this is our story…In a constant effort to maintain our position as the leader in the quality doll field, Effanbee is constantly seeking out and developing new concepts. In 1980 we decided to try a new approach in collectibles and introduced a character doll, W.C. Fields, to celebrate the comedian’s 100th birthday. The demand was instantaneous and enormous. It was apparent that the idea of finely detailed character dolls, limited to one year’s production was a show stopping sucess. W.C. Fields was our first Legend. We next introduced John Wayne in 1981 and he became another smash hit. Proud of this innovative collection, Effanbee hopes you will be thoughly delighted with each year’s addition to our distinguished Legend Series.”
I purchased Groucho in 1983 at a toy store in The Galleria in Houston, Texas.
