12″ Plastic Girl from Algarve with the Following Markings: Sacos Joa Ramalho-Lisbon, Portugal.” In the “Folk Costumes of the World” the authors provide the following information on the costume:
” In Algrave, the skirts are red,…with three bands of colored braid. The cotton blouse has a puffed upper sleeve gathered into a tight fitting lower section, a high round neck and a type of large collar…edged with lace. The colors for the blouses vary in color… with patterns on a white base. The blouse is worn outside the skirt like a jacket and the short apron is tied round the waist…
A black felt brimmed hat…is worn over a scarf with a floral design and a flower is fixed into the hat band. Several white petticoats are worn with white knitted stockings and leather boots.”
I received the doll as a gift in 2002 from Lino Restrepo and Gloria Mendoza, who purchased the doll for me while on vacation in Portugal.
