Kuna Indian Woman

Kuna Indian

17″ Cloth Kuna Indian Woman from the San Blas Islands in Panama. I found the following information about the San Blas Indians in R. Turner Wilcox’s “Folk and Festival Costume of the World”:

“San Blas Indian women dress in dark colored cotton such as Chinese red, deep blue and black and wear a gold ring in the nose from babyhood on. The sarong type of skirt is dark blue … and a blouse with the lower half embroidered … Very often the motifs have tribal meaning. The headkerchief is invariably bright red with a printed yellow design. Arm and leg bands are of fine bead work.”

I purchased the doll in 2010 from a seller in Cheshire, Connecticut.
