15 1/2″ Vinyl 1998 “Midnight Gamble” Gene. The doll came with the following story line:” Lady Luck must be a big fan of the so-beautiful American cinema star, Gene Marshall. After enjoying a private viewing of painter Jacques Zoli’s new exhibit, Miss Marshall and her date are seen at Le Rouge et Le Noir casino club around midnight. The roulette wheel must be a fan, too, for Gene, who had never gambled before, won big against the house, much to every one’s delight.”
This Gene is wearing the 2000 “Pink With Envy” outfit. This outfit was offered in the Madra collection and provided the following story line:”Madra decided it was time to strike when the success of ‘First Encounter’ was fresh in the studio’s mind. She campaigned to talk with Ruben Lilienthal and finally his assistant called and said he would see her if she could be there in an hour. ‘About time! thought Madra as she dashed about fixing face and hair and choosing an outfit that looked professional-a bright pink suit with classic lines. She grabbed her portfolio and arrived in time to hear R.L. shout into the phone, ‘Gene, dear! I’m so glad I caught you! Now about your new film-let’s get together at your convenience…’ Madra’s face flushed as pink as her outfit.” The suit is circa 1952 and was designed for Madra by Bob Lange.
I purchased the doll and outfit from the Ashton Drake Doll Catalog in 2000.
