Penka 1930’s Bulgarian Woman

Penka Bulgaria Girl-Penka Bulgaria Girl Back9″ Composition and Cloth 1930’s Penka. Penka was made by the Near East Industries in Bulgaria and later imported through New York. The original owner purchased the doll from Kimport Dolls in August of 1939. The doll came with the following information:

“These dolls from little Bulgaria of the Balkans are so exquisitely handsome that one needs to see them to appreciate the native artistry of design, the handloomed cloth, the elaborate patterning of tiny cross stitch on linen of heavy embroiders on wool. Penka is 9″ tall, her head is faithfully modeled composition, truly Bulgarian in feature. hair is silken, shoes crudely fashioned in the native peasant style of sturdy leather. She is made for us (Kimport Dolls) by a Christain foundation that aspires to make it’s people indepedent by their own artistic work. Imported from Sofia, Bulgaria.”

I purchased the doll in 1976 from Athena Antiques of Edina, Minnesota
