The Diana shown is wearing the Black and White Evening Gown, which was worn at the State Audience, Saudi Arabia-November, 1986. The outfit’s information card came with the following information:” On no occasion was the transformation of Diana from a shy and naive girl into a sophisticated and self-assured woman more evident than during the royal couple 1986 tour of the Gulf States.
Often referred to as her “Mideastern Showstopper”, this dramatic black and white gown was worn for the State Audience with Saudi Arabia’s King Faud ibn Abdul Aziz. It was one of two gowns designed especially for the tour by Elizabeth and David Emanuel. Fashioned with a V-neckline and long sleeves tapering from large puffed shoulders to tight-fitting wrists-the gown was distinguished by its half-black and half-white bodice, finished at the left hip with an enormous black and white striped bow.
This stunning gown contrasted smartly with the sumptuous surroundings of King Fahd’s palace.
The Princess showed sound judgement in understating her accessoriess for this occasion. She wore no necklace and no bracelets-only the pearl and diamond Queen Mary Tiara and her favorite diamond and pearl drop earrings.”
